Meet Steve Keene, the Wildly Prolific Painter Who’s Made Album Covers for Pavement, Silver Jews, and More

PitchFork: You’ve done a lot of work with your friends in Silver Jews. Tell me a little bit about your relationship with David Berman.

Steve Keene: I think about David every day. I feel a little cursed by David [laughs]. I mean, if you liked David, you really were obsessed with David. The Silver Jews’ music, I wish I could hear it objectively. I wish I didn’t know David, just to hear the music, because that was David in real life. David was so funny and just interesting, everything he said.

PF: What was it like to hear that last Purple Mountains record?

SK: I played it for the first time like two weeks ago, and I liked hearing it. It made me feel better. It’s pretty bleak, but the thing about David is that everything was slightly tongue in cheek. I’m glad it’s almost three years removed, now I can see a little bit of humor in it. It’s not just death and destruction—it’s irony and all this stuff.

Philadelphia Museum of Art - ‘The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even (The Green Box)’ by Marcel Duchamp [1934]

‘The Green Box is a compendium of facsimiles of ninety-four notes, sketches, and studies that Marcel Duchamp made between 1912 and 1917 while planning The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even (The Large Glass), the work that would be the high point of his early career. He worked with professional printers to achieve meticulous reproductions; the papers, inks, and even torn edges exactly match the originals. Duchamp also acted as publisher, overseeing the distribution of an edition of three hundred, plus twenty deluxe copies (including this one) with original notes or drawings included. The contents of the specially designed cardboard box covered with green flocking have no fixed order—readers are expected to sift through on their own and puzzle out the documents’ meanings. Duchamp thought of The Large Glass and The Green Box as complementary creations, and he maintained that neither could be properly studied without examining the other.’ — PMA
