Kwatee

The trickster god of the Indian tribes resident in the Puget Sound region of Washington, Kwatee and his assistants changed the world from its ancient form into the world we know today.

Kwatee was opposed in his plans to change the world, specifically by the giant animal people, such as the Spider, Ant, Beaver and Fox, but the trickster god merely changed them into ordinary animals, then he rubbed his hands over his own body until he made little balls of dirt and sweat, into which he fashioned people, the first Indians.

On his wanderings, Kwatee created other people, changing them from dogs and teaching them to use stones as mallets and cutting tools. He also killed the monster living in Lake Quinault.

When the cavernous maw of this beast opened to swallow Kwatee's brother and his canoe, the trickster god tossed hot rocks into the lake. The monster boiled in the water, dying and rising to the top of the lake. Slitting the creature's stomach he released his brother, who had changed into the father of hermit crabs.

How do we know evolution really happens?

It's a common misconception that evolution is a matter of faith, because it happens too slowly to observe. Here's the way one reader sees it: "I don't see any fish walking around, nor do I see any other creature in mid-evolving mode. . . . Simply stated, both creationism and evolution should be taught as competing theories; both are not provable, and both cannot be duplicated in a lab."

But evolution does happen in the lab, in real time, and it's bad news for us because such rapid evolution allows organisms that can kill us by evading drugs, vaccines, and our own immune systems.

Viral evolution is in the news because scientists reportedly created a new strain of bird flu (H5N1) that's highly contagious, prompting a government advisory board to request that scientific journals not publish the details.

As I quizzed Penn bioterrorism expert Harvey Rubin about the situation, he continued to talk about evolution and "fitness" of flu viruses. Indeed, he said, the whole point of creating a newer, scarier H5N1 was to help anticipate the virus' future evolution.

It's not easily transmissible now. But thanks to evolution, that might change.

This conversation led me to biologist Eddie Holmes of Penn State's Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics. "Viruses give us the best, most precisely defined examples of evolution you could possibly think of," he said.

Flu viruses evolve particularly fast because they're based on RNA - the single-stranded relative of DNA. RNA doesn't have any mechanism by which to repair copying errors, the way DNA does, so these viruses mutate much faster than DNA viruses.

Working with viruses, Holmes said, "is like watching human evolution on fast-forward." In 10 years, a virus can undergo as much evolution as a human could in 10 million.

The fact that these viruses undergo mutations is just part of the story. Their mutated progeny are subject to the sorting effect of natural selection. Those that are best at surviving and reproducing themselves predominate.

Viruses have hit upon a number of survival strategies, said Holmes. Measles infects children, thus ensuring a constant crop of new potential hosts. Herpes viruses can lie low, going undetected by the immune system much of the time, so it can survive in a host and spread for decades.

For flu viruses, the strategy is to evade the host's immune system. People are immune to whatever flu viruses have made them sick in the past, but evolution leads to slightly different versions coming back each season.

Some mutations change the proteins, called antigens, that are the targets of the immune system. By natural selection, the viruses that acquire new antigens can infect a lot more people and will be much more successful than those that have the same old antigens.

Holmes said evolutionary ideas were guiding the quest for a universal flu vaccine - one that would protect us not only from evolving seasonal viruses, but also from new ones, such as H5N1, that jump from other species.

To get such universal protection, scientists need to attack something that's common to all flu viruses. They are using genetic sequencing to find stretches of common genetic code, hoping to find a common Achilles' heel. If viruses didn't evolve from a common ancestor, this wouldn't work.

Meanwhile, at Penn, biologist/computer scientist Joshua Plotkin is learning about evolution by studying both flu and HIV.

Viruses disprove the common misconception that random mutations can't lead to improvements in an organism, he said. Unfortunately for us, random mutations lead to flu viruses that can escape our immune systems and vaccines.

"That's proof positive that some mutations are of adaptive utility," Plotkin said. "I can't think of a more straightforward example than that."

Skillet Mac & Cheese

Recipe

Serving macaroni and cheese in the skillet it’s baked in amps up the homey comfort factor. The secret ingredient in this bread crumb-topped beauty is the finely chopped cauliflower that blends in subtly with the pasta. Using three different cheeses guarantees maximum flavor and meltability.

Ingredients:

2 cups 1-inch-wide cauliflower florets
1¼ cups Light-and-Crisp Whole-Wheat Bread Crumbs
3 tablespoons freshly grated Parmesan cheese
2 teaspoons olive oil
3 cups cold low-fat (1%) milk
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1¼ cups shredded extra-sharp cheddar cheese (5 ounces)
¼ cup shredded Gruyere cheese (1 ounce)
2 teaspoons mustard powder
¾ teaspoon paprika
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
6 ounces (1 1/2 cups) whole-grain elbow macaroni, cooked for 3 minutes less than the package directions (about 3 cups cooked)
Nonstick cooking spray

Preparation:

1. Preheat the oven to 375°F.

2. Place the cauliflower into a steamer basket fitted over the pot, cover, and steam until just tender, about 5 minutes. Finely chop the steamed cauliflower.

3. In a small bowl, combine the bread crumbs, Parmesan and oil.

4. In a large saucepan, whisk together the milk and flour until the flour is dissolved. Whisking constantly, bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat. Reduce the heat to medium low and simmer until the mixture thickens slightly, two to three minutes. Stir in the cheddar, Gruyere, mustard powder, paprika, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Whisk until the cheeses are melted and the mixture is smooth, one to two minutes. Add the chopped cauliflower and macaroni and stir until well coated.

5. Spray an ovenproof 10-inch high-sided skillet with cooking spray. Pour the mixture into the prepared skillet. Sprinkle with the bread crumb mixture, place on a baking sheet, and bake until the top is browned and the cheese is bubbly, 35 to 40 minutes.

Bank Excuses on Foreclosure Growing Stale

The Bank of America lawyer laid down a patented rhetorical move heard in courts across America. Your Honor, this Orange County, N.Y., homeowner — a New York City police officer — didn’t make enough money to qualify for a mortgage modification. He didn’t send us the right documents.

He didn’t, he didn’t, he didn’t, and so we should be allowed to foreclose.

Justice Catherine M. Bartlett of New York State Supreme Court cut off the lawyer. You, she said, are telling me lies.

“Bank of America got a bailout, and this is an outrage, how this man has been treated,” she said. “Hard-working, middle-class Americans are trying to make it, trying to refinance with your bank.”

Either bank officials show up in person, the justice said, or I’m going to order them “here in handcuffs.”

Rage has acquired a cleansing power. Patience as a virtue is a hard sell at the burnt end of a four-year economic collapse. Zuccotti Park shakes, rattles and rolls; television yakkers chat about inequality; and the federal judge Jed Rakoff all but heckled the Securities and Exchange Commission last week for going easy on Citigroup misbehavior.

Then there is Eric T. Schneiderman, New York’s attorney general, caught in Month 5 of a face-off with the White House. President Obama dearly wants to seal a deal in which the nation’s largest banks toss over a few bales of cash — $20 billion to help with foreclosure relief — and the state attorneys general agree not to pursue sprawling and explosive legal cases against the banks.

Mr. Schneiderman and Attorney General Beau Biden of Delaware, joined by a few others, say no. Banks, they say, should disgorge more documents, testify more precisely and prove more completely that they own millions of mortgage notes. These rebel attorneys general want the banks to hand over more than $200 billion, which would enable the government to write down tens of millions of mortgages.

But in the end, their argument is elemental: Wouldn’t the nation benefit from knowing the truth about the behavior of banks and bankers?

“If you don’t air out the policies that led to the implosion of the economy, it will happen again,” says Mr. Schneiderman. “There’s not one sentence in the proposed agreement, not one period or comma about the stuff that blew up the economy. We can’t let the banks rewrite history.”

The desire to know precisely what happened during that give-a-mortgage-to-anyone-who-breathes, securitize-this frenzy has historical antecedents. In the Great Depression, the United States Senate hired another New York lawyer, Ferdinand Pecora, to write the report on its investigation of that collapse.

Mr. Pecora found more questions than answers, and insisted on more subpoenas, more forensic investigators and more brokers testifying under oath. Like a man reaching into a barrel of dead fish, he found a great stink. Not least, he discovered that National City (the lineal ancestor of the same misbehaving Citigroup) had sold flawed investments and that its president engaged in something close to tax evasion.

Seventy-eight years later, the Obama administration has Shaun Donovan, secretary of housing and urban development; the economic adviser Gene Sperling; and Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. dialing liberals, activists and bloggers, urging them to pressure the rebellious attorneys general to forgo emotionally satisfying inquiries and take the deal.

Banks make money and find loopholes, the president noted last month. These actions aren’t “necessarily against the law.”

That raises the question: How does he know?

Waiting For The Worms by Dan Pohlig

My first, and unfortunate, attempt at composting was using a static pile. The stinking, hot pile of primordial ooze I created was not only unfit for fertilizing my vegetables, but caused a severe rift in my relationship with my neighbors. So, I decided to switch to another method I’d discovered in my composting research: vermicomposting, or the use of worms to break down organic material.

This seemed perfect. Drill some holes in a box. Put some shredded newspapers in the bottom and food scraps on top. Add red worms. Voilà! Fertilizer. No work, no bad smells and it could be kept inside. Just about any box or bucket will work, but I wanted the most organic, least chemical-laden container for my army of garbage disposers. Since I lack carpentry skills (I chose to take ancient Greek in high school instead of wood shop,) I knew I wouldn’t be building the new home for my worms.

After I searched for “wood worm bin” and made a few mouse clicks, my four-tiered, untreated-wood, worm high-rise was on its way—along with a quarter-pound of worms. A week later, my wife was taking pictures of me with the worms like we had just returned from the hospital with our firstborn.

And just as I fear might be the fate of our eventual offspring, the worms went to live in our basement. Worms don’t like onions, garlic, too much citrus, meat, dairy or bread, so we’re basically raising vegan, gluten-free worms who are sensitive about their breath. Fortunately, my vegetarian wife handles all our non-Reese’s-related food shopping. and our diet consists mostly of worm-friendly foods.

I won’t say vermicomposting has been effortless, but the extra work I’ve put in has come from not trusting the worms to get the job done. I worried the food pieces were too big, so I began blending them into a slurry and straining out the liquid content. I was spending more time preparing their food than I was our cats’. (In fairness, though, castings—or worm poop—help things grow while cat poop gives me an idea of what an apocalypse would be like.)

Despite some early mistakes, the worms have multiplied from the original quarter-pound to about a pound and a half. Once I found the right balance of keeping the bin moist and the food supply steady, the worms stopped trying to make a run for it and spared themselves the indignity of becoming dried, twig-like carcasses on the tile floor. A fruit fly invasion earlier this summer sent the worm bin to summer camp in the backyard, but with winter approaching they’ll soon be back in the basement. We’ve since learned that microwaving or freezing the food scraps and covering them with more bedding helps prevent future fruit fly populations.

Most importantly, I learned patience is key. Given enough time, the worms will eat the food, no matter how big the pieces. Red worms like to travel up to find food, so I now have two tiers of bins separated by a wire mesh. Searching for the food and bedding in the top tier, the worms have been migrating for the past three weeks, leaving behind...

Street Skaters: Early last month, under I-95 in Port Richmond, saw two skateboarders filming themselves ollie onto and off the bow of this ^abandoned boat^. ~~The boat is still there.~~

Vert Skaters: A few weeks ago, after a computer session at the Fishtown Library Branch, was walking home when I spotted a teen sitting in the lifeguard's chair at the Public Pool. He was acting as guard/cop spotting sentry while a couple of his buddies skateboarded the empty pool. The 26th Precint parking lot is adjacent and the precinct itself is 1/2 block away.

Note: Where I grew up, the opportunity to skate pools was never afforded us. The pools were always rectangular with hard right angle corners, never round kidney forms. Also, Southwest Texas was generally warm during the autumn/winter months and pools were generally never drained thanks to chlorine & acid (ph levels).

After getting off (exiting?) the 15 trolley and heading towards the Fishtown Library this past Thurs., I suddenly smelled grease or fried foods. It was probably from (name of restaurant) or else some area resident was making onion rings.

Thurs. afternoon (1ish pm) was relatively pleasant, around low-mid 80's and the good smell/"odor" got me to thinking about cologne... fried onion-ring cologne to be precise. Don't know whether it would appeal to females but I think guys would really like it.

Over Your Cities Grass Will Grow, a film about the personal universe that Anselm Kiefer has built in the South of France.

"In 1993 Kiefer left Buchen, Germany for La Ribaute, a derelict silk factory near Barjac. From 2000 he began constructing a series of elaborate installations there. Like a strange, sprawling village, La Ribaute extends over 35 hectares and is composed of old industrial buildings and working studios that link to a network of underground tunnels dug out by Kiefer, which run underneath pavilions built to house paintings and installations. An underground pool at the cul-de-sac of a tubular iron tunnel is embedded within a crypt which backs onto to a 20 m tiered concrete amphitheatre. There are caves and woods, an open landscape of concrete towers – assembled like so many card houses – and secluded, private spaces. (…) the film enters into direct contact with the raw materials Kiefer employs to build his paintings and sculptures – lead, concrete, ash, acid, earth, glass and gold. Over Your Cities Grass Will Grow gives privileged access to Kiefer’s last days at La Ribotte prior to his move to Paris, where he now lives and works."

Being a NL fan from Texas, it would be [insert cuss word] despicable to have two AL teams & no NL team in TX. Plus it's more geographically correct.

(*) The American League should only be able to use the Designated Hitter during the All-Star Game if they had won the previous World Series.

Note: Why I dislike the DH...

If no players are substituted during a complete inning of play, there should only be a total of 9 players taking the field/batting for each team *not* 10. Sort of Basic.

Rule changes that need to happen

Did you see how Tampa Bay beat Boston last night (Sept. 15th)? A ground ball that should have ended the top of the third inning in a scoreless tie could not be caught by Boston shortstop Marco Scutaro because a broken bat was flying at him. A run scored and before you knew it, the Rays were up 4-0. It reminded me of three rule changes that need to be made immediately because they make so much sense:

1. An umpire can rule interference on the batter if his broken bat prevents a fielder from making an otherwise ordinary attempt at the baseball. The batter is ruled out -- in the same way a runner can be called out if the batter impedes the ordinary effort of the catcher to throw to a base on a steal attempt. Fielders shouldn't have to dodge flying objects that might impale them.

2. Pitches that strike any protective arm gear worn by the batter should be ruled a ball, not a hit batsman. It's easy to dive into pitches and hang over the strike zone when you're wearing armor. You should not be rewarded for it.

3. September rosters can be expanded to as many as 40 players, but game rosters shall remain at 25. Three hours before first pitch, each team must submit a list of 25 players eligible for that particular game -- that way you could, for instance, drop three starting pitchers not available that night and add three extra players. Let's stop such nonsense as playing 38 vs. 27 in pennant race games.

Incorrect Information:

Earned Run Average (ERA)

The earned run average measures pitching performance. The number represents the average number of runs a pitcher gives up in nine innings. An earned run is any run scored off a specific pitcher. Runs scored as the result of an error do not count as earned runs because they are not considered to be the pitcher's fault. The other team must "earn" the run for it to be counted in the ERA.

ERA is calculated by:

ERA = number of runs earned by the other team/number of innings pitched x 9
For example, if a pitcher gives up 18 earned runs in his first 60 innings:

ERA = 18 (runs earned by the other team)/60 (innings he pitched) x 9 = 2.70 runs per inning" <--incorrect, should be 2.70 runs per 9 innings

Wikipedia Notes - Excerpt: In 1952, Dr. Menzel was appointed acting director of the Harvard Observatory. One of Menzel's early acts as the Director was to cause lasting bitterness and feelings of betrayal and shock among a large section of astronomers when he evicted on short notice the American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO) from their headquarters and appropriated almost all of their endowment.

The roughly $100,000 taken from the AAVSO's Pickering Endowment was used to fund Menzel's own solar research. When the AAVSO was on the verge of getting a new headquarters at Boston University (BU), on January 6, 1954, the offer was withdrawn after the BU official was called by Menzel.

Other Interesting Miscellany: In one of his last papers, "Superstars and The Black Hole Myth" (1976), Menzel concluded, based on his analysis of the Schwarzschild equations, that black holes do not exist, and he declared them to be a myth.

Dear Sir,

Mr. Daniel J. Prasalowicz (CEO of Mr. Sandless) should hire an honest accounting firm. His highly leveraged business model is outdated and unsustainable. His bottom-line may "show a hefty profit... but uses the extra money to pay off debt."

Does this sound like "profit?" More like setting the groundwork for another over-hyped & over-valued I.P.O. (Initial Public Offering).

Case in point: "All raising my taxes will do is hurt the growth of my company and the creation of jobs. Take more money in taxes, and I will make cuts - payroll being first."

Sadly, the saber-rattling noise and fear-mongering espoused by Mr. Prasalowicz is music to the ears of the investment & business communities.

Weak Results Are Projected For Wall Street

Only a few short months ago, JPMorgan Chase traders were on such a roll that they did not have a single losing day in the first quarter.

But when the bank reports its second-quarter results this week, that hot streak will have come to an end. Analysts expect JPMorgan to count an almost 20 percent drop in its sales and trading revenues, reflecting a slowdown in investor activity and the dismal performance of its fixed-income and commodities groups.

Bank of America, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley are expected to report similar news. After helping prop up Wall Street during the financial crisis, core trading revenue is projected to drop, on average, by as much as 25 percent from the first quarter, according to Credit Suisse research.

That will put further pressure on the banks' growth prospects, which are already strained by stagnant loan growth and more stringent regulation. It is also prompting nearly every major Wall Street firm to contemplate another round of layoffs amid growing concerns that at least part of the weak results are permanent.

''We are undoubtedly being impacted by lower levels of activity,'' said William Tanona, a financial services analyst with UBS. ''There is a lot of uncertainty out there.''

Together, the five Wall Street banks are still going to take in more than $20 billion from their core trading operations, largely from business done on behalf of clients. For example, the banks routinely help airlines hedge oil prices or bring together buyers and sellers of stock, bonds and other complex securities -- often putting their own money on the line to facilitate a trade. But during the second quarter, the business was particularly hard hit.

Trading volumes fell sharply as investors became unnerved by the running debt crisis in Europe, the political standoff over the debt ceiling in the United States, and lingering concerns over the anemic growth of the broader economy.

Hermit Crabs Make Terrific Pets

Basic Info:

Hermit Crabs make great pets because they do not carry any known disease and are hypo-allergenic, which make Hermit Crabs a perfect pet for those with allergies. Land Hermit Crabs are very low maintenance and are easy to take care of. Nomally hermit crabs do not require large amounts of space and they are odorless.

In the wild Land Hermit Crabs live inland away from the water. Land hermit crabs are also non-aggressive, unlike many of the sea crabs. However, in the unlikely event that a Hermit Crab grabs your skin, the Hermit Crab will release immediately upon contact with water. Simply place the hermit crab pincher under warm running water (make sure it's not hot) and the hermit crab will instinctively release.

Hermit crabs are nocturnal and are more active at night than during the day. Hermit Crabs are not solitary animals and it is suggested to have more than one because of their social nature. In fact, in the wild we see Hermit Crabs move from one area to another as a group. Some natives even refer to them as "soldier crabs" due to their habit of "trooping" in numbers.

Food:

You may feed your Land Hermit Crab various kinds of fruits and vegetables (pieces of lettuce, grapes, bananas, etc). But these should be removed the next day because they are perishable. Hermit crabs also enjoy various other foods such as dry cereal, peanut butter, popcorn, and crackers. Give them a pinch three times a week.

Please do not feed them any extremely spicy or hot foods. If desired, commercial Hermit Crab food can be purchased to insure a proper diet that gives them all the vitamins and minerals they need. But be aware that some commercial foods contain fish that have an odor that could make your crab smells like fish. Also it is a good idea to leave them without any food 1 or 2 days a week so they can consume food they hide coner of their cage. This allows them to mimic the behaviors that they would exhibit in the wild.

Temperature:

Hermit crab cage should not be kept in direct sunlight. They are happy in temperatures between 70-80 degrees, and they prefer humidity. Placing a sea sponge in the cage will help to increase the humidity. Make sure you boil sea sponges often because hermit crabs also eat sea sponges.

Also putting plastic wrap before you put a lid on the top will help to keep more humidity in their cage. Just make sure to add little holes in the middle of this wrap for air. If your home temperature is lower than 65 degrees, you may consider to place a heating pad underneath the cage. Do not use a heat lamp because it can dehydrate your crab.

They can live without food for weeks, even months, but they need a constant supply of fresh water. Spring, distilled or de-chlorinated water(same qulity water for fish tank) is highly recommended (no enhanced water). If you have Ecuadorian land hermit crabs, they will require some salt (non-iodized sea salt) in their water.

You should also make sure not to allow water to remain under the gravel or sand in their cage, because that can cause bacteria or mites. You can also bathe (less than 5 minutes) or mist these little guys outside of the cage to keep them clean. Hermit crabs will enjoy their shower, but make sure they are dry before returning them to their cage after their bath.

Exoskeleton & Shell:

Hermit Crabs like all other crustacean have an exoskeleton. This hard exoskeleton only covers the front portion of the body. The tail is very soft and must be protected inside of the shell. When their shell home gets too small or dirty they will go searching for a new one. At that time you should provide them with a few new shells.

If you are not sure when they need shells, set empty shells always available in their cage, approximately 10-15% bigger than ones they have. If you set the shells in their cage, they will move in to them by themselves when they are ready. It can also be a great toy for them, even if hermit crabs don't move to new shells right away.

Ingredients:

4 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups LAND O LAKES® Butter, softened
1 1/4 cups sugar
1 1/4 cups firmly packed brown sugar
2 All-Natural Eggs
1 tablespoon vanilla
1 (12-ounce) package (2 cups) real semi-sweet chocolate chunks or chocolate chips

Directions:

Heat oven to 375°F. Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt in medium bowl; set aside.

Combine butter, sugar and brown sugar in large bowl. Beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often, until creamy. Add eggs and vanilla. Continue beating, scraping bowl often, until well mixed. Reduce speed to low. Beat, gradually adding flour mixture, until well mixed. Stir in chocolate chunks.

Drop dough by 1/4 cupfuls, 2 inches apart, onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 10 to 14 minutes or until light golden brown. (DO NOT OVERBAKE.) Let stand 1-2 minute on cookie sheets; remove to wire cooling rack.

Recipe Tip: For 2 1/2-inch cookies, drop dough by rounded tablespoonfuls, 2 inches apart, onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until light golden brown. 4 dozen cookies. Nutrition Facts (1 cookie)Calories: 320

1/2 cup dried breadcrumbs
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup Land O Lakes® Butter, melted
2 teaspoons finely chopped fresh garlic
6 (4-ounce) boneless skinless chicken breasts

Directions:

Heat oven to 375°F. Combine breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, parsley, pepper and salt in shallow bowl; set aside.

Combine butter and garlic in 9-inch pie pan. Dip 1 chicken breast at a time into butter mixture; place into breadcrumb mixture, turning to coat evenly. Place chicken breasts into ungreased 13x9-inch baking pan. Drizzle with any remaining butter mixture.

Bake for 25 to 35 minutes or until chicken is lightly browned and juices run clear when pierced with fork.

Recipe Tip: Adding herbs to a recipe can change the way it tastes. For flavor variations, try mixing 1/2 teaspoon dried herbs, such as rosemary or sage, into the melted butter mixture.

5) Oasis: I don't really want to make a case for this choice as I do kind of hate myself for it.

4) Stone Temple Pilots: In a time when the biggest bands in the world were looking more and more like janitors, Jesey's own DeLeo brothers helped remind us that glitter, bell-bottoms, and a firm grasp of Aerosmith's first four albums should never be out of reach for any respectable Rock'N'Roll band.

3) Bauhaus: The brothers Haskins (and Daniel Ash) helped ensure that Bauhaus was more than a paraphrased tribute to David Bowie and gave the band a sound the audible equivalent to being sexually assaulted in the dark alley of a German Expressionist film.

2) The Black Crowes: Although I'm not generally a fan of beards or pot, the Robinson brothers generally had enough blow and designer duds to balance any hippie-dom with glamorous badassedness. And despite the fact that they share fans with Phish, they maintain a credible-music literacy that led them to often cover the work of those who find themselves at #1.

1) The Stooges: It proves hard to convince yourself not to cite Iggy as the most important Stooge, but the Asheton brothers had arguably more influence over that God-awful racket that anyone in the know recognizes as the most beautiful aural-aesthetic ever provided by postmodernity.

Free Admission At Philly Museums

Admission to the Philadelphia Museum of Art will be free Wednesday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. as part of International Museums Day. All museum galleries in the main building and Perelman Building across Kelly Drive will be open. The Rodin Museum and museum-run park houses, Cedar Grove and Mount Pleasant, also will be free.

Other participating museums are the Philadelphia Academy of the Fine Arts and the American Swedish History Museum.

The Pew Center for Arts and Heritage has awarded $874,900 to nine exhibition projects throughout the region, including an unusual exhibition planned around removal and preservation of graffiti at abandoned Holmesburg Prison and a 10-year museum retrospective of work by photographer Zoe Strauss, known for her installations beneath I-95.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art received $250,000 for its 2012 retrospective of Strauss' street portraits, buildings, and signage, a documentation of struggling urban life.

Strauss says that her ambition is to "create an epic narrative that reflects the beauty and struggle of everyday life."

The exhibition will include a lobby kiosk designed by Megawords; the museum will project Strauss-designed slide shows on its facade, mount a banner-size photograph facing west over the Schuylkill, and present Strauss photographs on city billboards.
